Grade 4 and 5

We differentiate and meet students where they are. We challenge our students to explain their thinking and be reflective.

In literacy, we focus on small group instruction in reading. 

• Small groups of students (usually 4-5) who are reading at a similar level, meet with their teacher twice/week.
• Each week, the group will focus on one book, chosen and presented by the teacher.
• Students learn and practice reading strategies, discuss what they read, complete word work, and practice writing.

In fourth and fifth grades, students use hands-on materials to explore math. They practice using language to talk about their thinking. Students are given daily opportunities to collaborate with their peers to explore, talk and think together.

In fourth grade, your child will:

• Multiply bigger numbers.
• Divide with remainders.
• Solve real-world word problems.
• Understand large numbers in various forms.
• Work with fractions.
• Understand lines, angles, and quadrilaterals.
• Compare decimals.

In fifth grade, your child will:

• Add, subtract and compare fractions and decimals.
• Identify and describe three-dimensional shapes, and find their volumes and surface areas.
• Use long division to divide large numbers by multi-digit numbers.
• Using landmark data.

Fourth and Fifth grade students are eager to explore new ideas and develop their communication skills.  We look forward to sharing what, and how, your child is learning.
