| Welcome to Mrs. Casserly-Smith's Fifth and Sixth Grade | | November 16 - 24 Intersession for those students who are signed up. November 25 - 29 Thanksgiving Break November 30 Back to School
I hope to make my classroom a challenging and exciting place to learn and grow academically and socially. I provide students with great opportunities for personal growth and for the development of social awareness. I have a lot of interesting activities planned this year both in and out of the classroom that will engage and promote academic rigor to all students. Stay tuned to this web site to read all about our fabulous experiences! I have 25 students in my class this year. We are located in the green gathering in room 131.
Homework Routine: Students are provided with a homework planner at the beginning of the year. I give homework on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays. Due to the many
commitments that families have I have designated Thursday a catch-up
night. Otherwise all homework is due the day after it is assigned. The homework consists of a math
sheet, a spelling assignment, and at least 30 minutes of reading.
Students should still read on Thursdays even though no formal homework
has been given.
• Students are expected to read 30 minutes or more daily, at their own reading level. They are expected to read 25 books by July 2010.
Parent / Teacher Communication Parent / Teacher communication is crucial to student success in fifth and sixth grade. Please watch for Friday Notes which are signed by parents and returned on Monday. The letter will explain what your child is learning, it will give reminders to upcoming events, and it will let you know whether or not homework was completed for the week. The letter will go home in your student's Friday Folder along with corrected work and notes from the office.
If you have any questions for me please call the school at 651-290-7595 or email me at mary.casserly-smith@spps.org

Writer's Workshop The class is working on a Native American simulation called Honor. They are pretending to go on a 12 day Stray, in the wilderness. They must make decisions that are respectful to earth so that they can return with Honor and become adults in our Mai Acumwaa tribe. The children have each chosen a Native American name, with the help of their families. They are researching, problem solving, and using their imaginations to complete the work.
It is now the end of the stray and the tribe members are writing speeches that will be given to their elders asking us for Honor.

| Student Council | This year's primary elections are on Tuesday October 20th. The 5th and 6th grade classes will elect 2 people for each position from each classroom, and those students will give their speeches to the 3-6 grades the following Tuesday October 27th - and that is Election Day! Stay tuned for those results!
