Welcome to Second Grade!

  • We are so excited for the 2016 - 2017 school year!

On this page you will find important information that corresponds to each second grade classroom such as fieldtrips, picture day, musical dates, etc.* We have also included an overview of what we are working on in each subject with the Minnesota State Standards they go with. If you would like to look through the Minnesota State Standards, the webite where they can be found is linked below. Feel free to contact us, our e-mails are listed at the bottom of the page. Enjoy!

    Month Overview by Subject:

Math: We have wrapped up our unit on 2 dimensional and 3 dimensional shapes. We are revisiting adding and subtracting one and two digit numbers.

    • Use strategies to generate addition and subtraction facts including making tens, fact families, doubles plus or minus one, counting on, counting back, and the commutative and associative properties. Use the relationship between addition and subtraction to generate basic facts.
    • Solve real-world and mathematical addition and subtraction problems involving whole numbers with up to 2 digits.

Reading: Our new unit is about overcoming obstacles. We are trying to answer the question, "How can we overcome obstacles?" We are still working on our reading stamina.

    • Recount stories, including fables and folktales from diverse cultures, and determine their central message, lesson, or moral.

    • Describe how reasons support specific points the author makes in a text.
    • Describe how characters in a story respond to major events and challenges.

    • Describe the overall structure of a story, including describing how the beginning introduces the story and the ending concludes the action.

    • Acknowledge differences in the points of view of characters, including by speaking in a different voice for each character when reading dialogue aloud.

Writing: We have started our realistic fiction unit. In writing stories, we are still expecting students to demonstrate a command of the conventions of English within their stories i.e. capitalization and punctuation.

    • Write narratives and other creative texts in which they recount a well-elaborated event or short sequence of events, include details to describe actions, thoughts, and feelings, use temporal words to signal event order, and provide a sense of closure.

    • Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English capitalization, punctuation, and spelling when writing.

Teaming: Teaming will resume March 2nd with Mrs. Logan, the theatre teacher.
